A banig is a handwoven mat traditionally used in the Philippines for sleeping and sitting. Banig mats are woven from abaca leaves in an arduous and tedious process that involves a sequential order of steps to create interlaced folds and geometric patterns. By weaving together traditional techniques with contemporary design, Vela Manila showcases Filipino heritage while empowering skilled craftspeople in the Philippines.
